Flor y Canto del Barrio (FyCdB) is a San Diego-based nonprofit Poetry Collective rooted in the voices of the barrio. Founded by a circle of Xicana and Xicanx poets, FyCdB exists to cultivate creative spaces where poetry becomes a tool for healing, memory, resistance, and joy. We host community workshops, open mics, and literary events that celebrate the lived experiences of historically marginalized communities, with a focus on Chicanx, Indigenous, and Latinx voices. Our name, Flor y Canto, honors ancient Nahua traditions where poetry and song were seen as sacred expressions of truth.
Our mission is to uplift and amplify community voices through poetry that reflects the beauty and struggle of life in the barrio. We believe everyone has a story to tell—and that poetry can be a powerful force for transformation, connection, and cultural survival. Whether we’re gathering in libraries, community centers, or neighborhood parks, FyCdB is committed to creating inclusive, intergenerational spaces where emerging and established poets can come together, learn from one another, and share their truths in a spirit of respeto, solidaridad, and empowerment.
